VALKYRIE

REGION: Scandinavia

While valkyries tend to be a more recognizable element of Norse mythology, they are also some of the most reimagined. Whether it’s in literature, artwork, and even music, the valkyrie conjures imagery of women warriors descending from the skies to escort the fallen to the afterlife. Most of the historical depictions we have of them come from stories and literature which describe them as fierce, armor clad shield maidens. But in the 19th century a revival of interest in Nordic roots grew and they began to appear in more contemporary work. These depictions tended to shift these women to more delicate and feminine figures. They were likened to angels and given wings with flowing robes.

While I believe they are not without grace, their association with power and death resonate more deeply with me. I envision them more wild and unkempt, slighting terrifying but ultimately wielding a comforting power of leading us to whatever comes after our bodies pass.
