REGION: Mexico

Santa Muerte - the personification of death. She is the most distinct and unique example of Mexican neopaganism and folk Catholicism. Often portrayed holding a scythe, her origins can be traced back to “La Parca” or grim reaper from medieval Spain however many of her attributes are also derived from death deities in mesoamerican ideology.
