MATRES

REGION: Hispania

Believed to be one of the earliest Celtic deities, Matres was a goddess of fertility and motherhood. Most of the surviving depictions of her show her as three women. Triplicity was a common theme in Celtic mythology and while versions of the pantheon varied by region, this pattern among others have been found across a wide geographical range.

Matres, or The Three Mothers, was often shown breastfeeding and surrounded by bowls fruits thought to represent prosperity. The women wore either headdresses or veils and were believed to be a protective entity over households.
