HEL

REGION: Scandinavia

Hel is a figure from Norse mythology who presides over the realm of the underworld - Niflheim. Those who did not die in battle were sent to her realm, also named Hel (unrelated to Hell from Christianity). Her realm is found below the roots of Yggdrasil, the tree of life, where the serpent dragon - Niðhöggr is constantly chewing on its roots. She is said to appear partially blue to represent the decay of death. Because of her appearance Odin sent her to rule the underworld away from the other Aesir. She never married nor took a lover and embraced her dark, deathly role.
Often she is perceived as cruel and fierce yet one could also argue her life is one of independence and hardship.
