COATLICUE

REGION: Mexico

Coatlicue’s name translates to “feathered serpent skirt”.

Coatlicue was a priestess that one day while sweeping, came across a small orb of feathers. After keeping it, she woke the next morning pregnant with Huitzilopchtli - the sun god. Mistaking this for adultery, her 400 other sons and daughter - Coyolxauhqui the moon goddess came to her temple for retribution. Huitzilopochtli burst from her womb fully grown and armored. He killed Coyolxauhqui and his brothers but not before Coatlicue was beheaded. From her neck sprung two serpent heads and she transformed into a terrifying beast.

She is known as the “mother of the gods”, both giver and consumer of life.
