ARTEMIS

REGION: Greece

Artemis from Greek mythology, was the goddess of nature, the hunt, the moon and most importantly women. Historians have often debated the significance of her virginity, with some interpreting it as a display of her independence and immunity to the influence of gods and men. Others interpret it as asexuality and claim she is the antithesis of Aphrodite - the goddess of love and sex.

There is no debate, however, that Artemis was closely connected to the moon and lunar cycles. As such she was revered as a patron of women and childbirth. It was often believed that childbirth during a full moon was fortuitous and easiest on the mother.
